Day One is the Journal app you have been looking for. It is super easy to use, combines words and photos, a reminder function and the ability to auto add location and weather. I admit to having this app installed for a long time. I just didn’t have the desire to journal or test the app. One day, after using Loop Journal for a while, I decided to try to use Day One as well. For about 30 days, I have kept both and find each to have their benefits. Loop Journal prompts you to enter your thoughts on a specific topic, Day One is more free flowing.
Total Score: 27 Loop Journal is easy to use and makes keeping track of your thoughts and ideas seamless. I have tried a number of apps with this type of functionality, but none captured my attention like this one. I look forward to the questions, and often look ahead to see the next day’s question so I can think about it. I schedule the prompt for early evening when I sit down to relax. It helps me put my day in context. I have used it for about two months. I can’t wait until it circles back next year.
This app, Glasses.com, is the perfect companion to help you shop for frames for your lenses. I don’t know about you, but when I am standing in a store I would prefer to shop for frames with my glasses on! This app allows you to see how frames look on your face and order them through the app. With the information provided, you could, of course, find a local store, go try them on and then arrange for your purchase through them. I happen to be in the market for new frames, so this app came along at a perfect time.
Gestured based and easy to use, Analog Camera is my new “go to” app for photography. Created by the designers of the marvelous task app, CLEAR, this app pares down the tasks you need to do into simple pieces and allows you to capture moments and share them with only a few easy gestures.
CamFind allows you to take a photo of something to find out more about it. That sounds simple when you try an object like an iPod. You get the expected results, what it is, where you can buy it (relative to where you are) , product reviews and general info. That is impressive, but nearly as impressive as taking a picture of a flower or a building around you and having it respond, fairly quickly, with everything you would want to know about it. CamFind delivers amazing results and is likely to settle a bar bet or two. Continue reading →
I have to admit that I wasn’t searching for a new mailbox and was satisfied with the functionality of the one supplied by Apple. I know there are a lot of better mailboxes out there, but I need one that combines my Google, Yahoo and POP accounts. Why would I switch to one that only handled my Google account. Well, the functionality of the Orchestra, Inc. iPad and iPhone Mailbox looked to be significantly improved and it promises to add other options. With that promise, I downloaded the app and fell in love.

Photography is not my forte so I have not focused on photo enhancing apps. However, I discovered Halftone and think it has the right balance of ease of use and photo sharing that makes it interesting to me. If you share a lot of photos on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and want to give them a little oomph then I suggest you give this app a try. Halftone takes your photos and through the use of filers and captions, gives them a vintage comic book look and feel.
Worldictionary is not just another language learning app. It is packed with options and is the kind of app that you start telling your friends about. The coolest feature is the ability use your phone’s camera for word recognition. I’ll explain how that works below. Continue reading →

Are you an actor, or have you thought about seeking parts in movies to earn some extra money? If this is your chosen path, you need head shots. One of the delights of having an iPhone or iPad is taking and sharing photos. You can go through your Photos app to display them, or you can spice up the process by creating photo albums, collages and slide shows using Photo Table. The process is easy and once you get started, it is a bit addictive.
Instagram is an enormously popular app. It has over 200 million users. I’m a little late to the party here, but decided I would be remiss if I didn’t review it as well. I’m not of the “take a picture of my buddies at a party” generation, but I do think Instagram offers a lot of potential for the casual user. You could create an account account for just your family or share your hobby with others (more on this below). Continue reading →
