Total Score: 29.5
The Plunge of Icarus is a cinenovel. If you have never heard of or seen a cinenovel – you are in for a treat. You can read it like a traditional book, listen to the narrated version and add music. Leave your reality and become part of this new world. It is a classic hero novel, complete with true love. It is a cautionary tale about war. It is a sci-fi story that seems contemporary. It is hard to imagine you can pack all of that into a novel – but they did. You are immersed in the story and will not want to leave.
Price Rating = 5 $15.99. This app is comparably priced to a book, but it is more than that. The photography work in this book is imaginative and haunting. Along with the app you can also download the book as a regular ePub. So, combining the cost of the app with the cost of the book, and you have yourself a bargain
Ease of Use Rating = 5 It is as easy as turning pages, but with each turn you see much more than on a printed page.
Readability Rating = 4.5 I feel slightly guilty taking off any points for readability, but at times the text is difficult to read. That usually relates to background and photography being used. Having said that, the presentation of the text is tied to the mood being set and is a unique experience.
Will You Use It Rating = 5 If you love to read on your iPad this will offer you a new experience. I often reread books and I can imagine this is one I will revisit.
Downsides Rating = 0 I didn’t find any downsides with the app. It is beautifully written and photographed. But, it is not just an assembly of words and images, the combination creates an original art form. There is some adult material, so for some that might be negative.
Consumer Review Rating = 5 This is a new app has not received a lot of reviews. In cases like this I combine what is in iTunes with what I would have rated it.
Why Do You Need This App Rating = 5 In my case I need to read. This novel is directly in my wheelhouse. It is a combination of interesting technology through delivery to the iPad and an incredible story. I will be recommending this book to my friends – and, well, anyone who will listen to me.
How does it work?
- Once you download the app you start seeing some of the functionality – the credits and the first of the images start to display.
- If you tap the bottom of the screen you will see on the bottom right the toggles for music (a musical note) and narration (an icon that vaguely resembles a person). I would start with both toggled on and then explore to see what you like. If you tap EXTRAS you access the special features. I would recommend saving this until you finish the book.
- To turn pages you swipe left and right, using standard iPad functionality. If you choose the narration option, you will still need to turn the pages.
As I mentioned above, the story captures your attention quickly. You might think you know the direction it is going, but there are plenty of surprises. I will tell you that I eventually turned off the narration. I am glad I started with it, so that I could understand what was possible. But, I am a fast reader and I was fascinated by the story and wanted to move quickly. No spoiler alerts here – read and enjoy. Let me know what you think.
