“I Like to Move it, Move it” With the Moves App

  Are you looking for an easy pedometer app?  One that keeps running in the background, doesn’t require a lot of settings adjustments?  If you are, Moves, is the app for you. And if an app ever deserved a theme song, Moves does.  I declare “I like to move it” by Will.i.am as their official song.

  Price Rating = 5    Free.  No extra devices needed.  It just does the job.

Ease of Use Rating = 5    It couldn’t be easier.  You download it and it runs in the background.

 Readability Rating = 5     Nice colorful display.  The font is a good size and the contrast of white on dark gray makes it readable.

 Will You Use It Rating = 5    All you have to do is carry your phone with you.  It can be in a pocket, purse or bag.  It senses movement and interprets the difference between personal motion (walking, jogging, running, cycling) and motor transportation (cars, buses and trains.)

 Downsides Rating = 0   I didn’t take points off for it, but it does drain the battery.  If you weren’t doing it already, you’ll need to charge your phone every day.

 Consumer Review Rating = 4   There are about 140 ratings right now and they are primarily positive.  Most complaints related to battery life issues.

Why Do You Need This App Rating = 5   When we know how much we move we can adapt and start moving a little more (or a lot more) each day.   This app provides you the information you need to make a start at improving your health.

How does it work?

  1. When you download the app it asks if it can use your current location.  You have the choice of “Don’t Allow” or “Allow.”  You need to allow it so that it can track your distance when you are walking outside.
  2. Your next option is whether you would like daily notifications of your activity.  It generates a simple note to you with your total steps.  It’s not intrusive and I would recommend you say yes.
  3. The app doesn’t demand any other involvement by you, other than to move.  It shows where you are located and as you move around, where you were when you walked.  It calculates the total amount each day with different color circles for walking, running or cycling.
  4. You do have some option settings through the SETTINGS icon.  You can switch the tracking to Off to save battery life when you know you are going to be stationary for a while.  You can change the measurements to metric units.  And, on this page you will find the FAQs.

Now, the rest is up to you.  I’ve been using it for a week and it definitely helps me keep the need to move in my mind. I feel good when I move more each day.  Try it and let me know what you think.
