Start Training With Zombies, Run! 5K

Total Score:  28

There are a number of 5K training apps on the market and many of them are very well planned and can provide you with the instruction you need.  But, after trying Zombies, Run! 5K, I can tell you this is the first one that is so interesting that I can’t wait to go out and train again.  It is a combination of training and edge-of-your-seat story telling – with you as part of the story.

Price Rating = 5     $1.99.

Ease of Use Rating = 5     For a full-featured app like this, there are very few settings. It’s pretty much ready when you press go.

Readability Rating = 4     Some of the text is small.  You can read it, but it would be nice if you could enlarge it.

Will You Use It Rating = 5     Since this app combines a story with a fitness regime you want to keep going because you are an actor in the play.

Downsides Rating =  0     I didn’t find any downsides.  I would say this app is best for someone just starting to train for a 5K.  However, there is room in the process to use this app if you have a greater fitness level.

Consumer Review Rating = 4     The reviews are mostly positive. Some people reported bugs with music.  I didn’t experience any issues, so maybe those bugs are fixed.

Why Do You Need This App Rating = 5     Even if you used this app as an accompaniment to a walk I think you would find yourself exercising more.  Anything that encourages exercise is valuable.

How does it work?

  1. The stated purpose of this app is through 25 workouts to train you to become a 5K runner. You listen to the story through your headphones and follow instructions. Each workout takes around 30 – 40 minutes.
  2. The first thing you listen to is the opening story about how you end up in a place surrounded by Zombies.  The instructions for this section are to walk or run at your own level as you are introduced to the storyline.  It is gripping and the voice actors are fabulous.
  3. After you get the back story in place, you are ready for your first workout.  It combines directions for you (walk for 10 minutes, run for 15 seconds and walk for 1 minute 10 times, and then free time (walk or run) for 10 more minutes.  Along the way you are instructed by the people at Abel Township.  I haven’t made it past this level yet, but obviously, the sessions will increase in difficulty as you develop strength and stamina..
  4. You can listen to your own playlists as you run/walk.  Your trainer will interrupt the music to give you instructions as needed.  The creepy sound of the occasional Zombie breathing behind you does offer some encouragement.
  5. Once you complete a workout, you see a sticky note on cork board (the home screen) with a completed stamp and the date.  The next workout is ready for you to listen to.
  6. Through the SETTINGS icon (bottom left) you can share your runs or maps, adjust the volume, set whether you want distance to be measured in kilometers or miles, set the type of music player and synchronize with ZombieLInk.
  7. One of the perks of this app is the accompanying social aspect.  By registering through ZombieLink you can see your stats.  It also appears that as I continue this I will be given awards that will help me add items to my own personal Abel Township. I’ll add more details here as I continue the training.
  8. There is also a Twitter account, Facebook page and a blog to accompany this app. I have stated that I don’t consider my iPhone as my primary source for game playing.  But, I happily admit, this is a game that has me hooked.
  9. I am sure there are more features to this app.  I’ll continue to update this review as I train.

If you want to get out and move more often and you want to do it in a way that is engaging and encouraging, I recommend this app.  I am happily going by the name Runner Five while I train.

Devices:   This app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.  It requires iOS 5.0 or later.    It was developed by Six to Start
