I test a lot of productivity apps because I crave organization. I am not organized by nature, so I need a lot of help. I want options to order reminders by date, by category, prioritize some – but not others, get reminders, add, and move them around easily. Any.DO does all those things, and a few more.

Instagram is an enormously popular app. It has over 200 million users. I’m a little late to the party here, but decided I would be remiss if I didn’t review it as well. I’m not of the “take a picture of my buddies at a party” generation, but I do think Instagram offers a lot of potential for the casual user. You could create an account account for just your family or share your hobby with others (more on this below). Continue reading “Instagram – Social Media Through Photos”

Shine is an app that lets you set goals for weekly activity and track your progress. There was an indiegogo project for a wearable device that will be the companion product to this app. The device, when available. will be the size of a quarter and introduce a new way to sync with your iPhone. Until that product becomes available, the Shine app can still help you plan and provide motivation.
Update 8/3/13 – at long last my Shine has arrived. I’ll begin testing and providing additional feedback as to ease of use. You’ll find that content at the end of this review.
Upcoming: Comparison of UP and Shine.

War Horse delivers on so many levels. If you love history, you will find a WWI timeline, historical photos, artifacts, letters and films. You’ll also see insights from various experts on WWI including ones from Flanders Field Museum, the National Army Museum (London), The National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial (Kansas City), the grandson of General Jack Seely, and from the Chief Executive of the Brooke (an international charity for the welfare of working equines). If you love performance, you will find heart-wrenching performances of poems like The Charge of The Light Brigade or Dulce et Decorum Est. The most standout performance is the author performing an edited version of the story with musicians John Tams and Barry Coope. In addition, but certainly the cornerstone of the app, you can read the illustrated novel or listen to Michael Morpurgo’s reading. It is almost hard to imagine all of this in one app. Continue reading “Learn, Read and Enjoy War Horse”

There is nothing I enjoy more than having someone read to me. You get all of that with Lisgo Text to Speech Voice Reader for Web News. There is also an iPad version. Continue reading “Listen on the Go with the Lisgo Text to Voice Reader for Web News”

Egyptian pyramids have fascinated us since Howard Carter discovered the treasurers of King Tut’s tomb in 1922. We have enjoyed movies about them, TV shows and an amazing number of books. Now, Touch Press brings us an app that allows us to walk through the Pyramids, not only as if we were there, but better than that! Some of the views you have in this app are in protected areas and even if you were there, you couldn’t see them. Not only that, Dr. Zahi Hawass adds his extensive knowledge of the area to the project. Pyramids 3D is a treasure. Continue reading “Explore Egyptian Tombs with Pyramids 3D”
