Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge with GG Bridge App

Total Score:  30

For anyone who has seen the majesty of the Golden Gate Bridge, or wants to, this book app, GG Bridge, is a must have.  The actual title of the book, not used on iTunes, is “A Wild Flight of the Imagination.” The app includes photos, architectural drawings, maps, music, historical recordings, a short film and more.  The bridge opened for pedestrians on May 27, 1937 and for vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937. Happy Anniversary Golden Gate Bridge!

Price Rating = 5     Free. Since they were kind enough to offer this for free, I’ll go ahead and offer up a plug for the sponsors – the California Historical Society and United Healthcare. It was produced by Sol Editions and Wild Blue Studios.

Ease of Use Rating = 5     The directional instructions are straightforward and moving around the book is easy.

Readability Rating = 5     The full screen of the iPad shows this book well.

Will You Use It Rating = 5     There is a lot of information to explore and it will take a while to complete it all. I think you will be as fascinated as I was.

Downsides Rating = 0     I did not see any downsides.  It only displays in landscape mode, but that does not detract from the presentation.

Consumer Review Rating = 5     The book was released on May 18, 2012, and there are comments like “It’s a great example of the iPad’s use as an educational tool!”  One reviewer commented it was a wonderful compliment to the actual exhibition.

Why Do You Need This App Rating = 5     The Golden Gate Bridge is a landmark for our country and having the pleasure of learning about it is a gift.

How does it work?

  1. When you open the book, you are greeted with a spectacular photograph of the bridge, the sound of sea gulls and an old recording by the chief engineer Joseph Strauss. As you swipe the next couple of pages you are given tidbits of information.
  2. The table of contents allows you to move through the chapters easily. One of the unique features of this book is that sometimes as you swipe you move through a wide photograph or piece of art. It helps to give you some prospective of the magnitude of the project.
  3. As you are looking at an image or piece of text, if you swipe up you find more information about the image(s) on the screen. You also have an opportunity to share the tidbit of information through Facebook or Twitter.
  4. Like most books, a slider at the bottom allows you to move quickly through the book.
  5. Tapping in the middle of the screen gives you the opportunity to move through the book as a slide show, go to the table of contents, play sound, or move through the pages by tapping an arrow.
  6. The text is primarily short and to the point. If you want more detail you can explore.
  7. Not all photos or documents allow you to pinch and zoom.  Many times there is a small magnifying glass in the right hand corner.  If you click on it you can pan around the photo.  You will then need to tap the X at the top of the page to return to the book.

This is a lovely book, I appreciate having the opportunity to review it, and I know I’ll spend hours poring over this rich historical book and learning more about the bridge.  I feel fortunate to have been able to see the bridge in person (and on a beautiful sunny day), but if you haven’t had that opportunity, this book will take you a long way towards feeling that you have.

Device: This app is compatible with the iPad. It requires iOS 4.3 or later. For more information, you can review the iTunes link or CaliforniaHistoricalSociety.org.
