If you love to read, than Overdrive for iPad or iPhone will become one of your favorite apps. You add your library, search for an available title, and download a book. For my library, there is a seven-day limit. I assume something similar exists for other libraries. This is a great resource for the avid reader. It is a green solution to driving to a library to check out books – whether you want to read one or listen. There are certainly more books available to check out at a library, but this is a great way to grab a book from the comfort of your home. It can also be used to read books obtained from retail sites.
Price Rating = 5 This app is free
Ease of Use Rating = 5 The app itself is easy to use – learning how to check out books takes a little use before it can be accomplished quickly.
Readability Rating = 5 The font on both the iPad and iPhone are a good size and easy to read.
Will You Use It Rating = 5 If you read and like to read on your electronic devices, this is another must-have app.
Downsides Rating = 0 The only downside is that not all books are available to check out. That is not a reflection on the app; it is just the current state of electronic books from libraries.
Consumer Review Rating = 4 There are over 35,000 reviews right now and the app is well received by the community.
Why Do You Need This App Rating = 5 If you like to read and you like the convenience of checking out books electronically, then you will use this. I am sure that Amazon does not appreciate this, but it does save money because you are not tempted to buy a book to read. On the other hand, you can download your purchased books to Overdrive rather than Kindle.
How does it work?
- To check out a library books you click on the “Get Books” tab. From that tab, you add a library. When you select your library, you are moved to the website for your library. You can download Kindle or ePub books from this site.
- If you select a book from a retail site, you will be prompted to open in either iBooks or OverDrive (if you have the app loaded). From that point, you can start reading.
- You can load more than one library if you live in more than one area or belong to more than one.
- Not only can you download books to read, but also you can listen to audio books.
Basically, Overdrive is a vehicle to allow you to check out library books. You can download them to Overdrive or Kindle. In addition, Overdrive is an option when you download retail books. I expect I will come back to this review and add even more features later. Right now, it is my go-to app for checking out library books.
