MyFitnessPal App – An Easy Way to Track Your Diet and Exercise

Total Score:  29.5

MyFitnessPal is a helpful tool for keeping track of your food and exercise.  The My Fitness Pal HD version is for the iPad. It’s easy to use, always handy on your phone, iPod or iPad and gives you the feedback you need to manage your intake versus your calorie expenditure.  There a number of apps that do this same thing, but this one stands out in the crowd.  Now that it has an iPad version, it really rises above the rest.

Price Rating = 5      This app is free.

Ease of Use Rating = 5     This app has a database that includes a large number of foods, including restaurant selections, and searching for an item is easier than on other apps.  It also has a bar code scanner, which makes entering food super easy.

Readability Rating = 4.5     Medium size font.  Not hard to read, but I wouldn’t rate it as easy either.  The font on the iPad version is easy to read.

Will You Use It Rating = 5     Nutritionists will tell you that logging your food helps you to see how much you are eating and allows you to make informed decisions.  If you are committed to weight loss, you will use this app.

Downsides Rating  = 0     The purpose of this app is to keep track of what you are eating.  It does take a little time to enter the food, but probably less than 15 minutes a day.

Consumer Review Rating = 5     With more than 280,000+ ratings the latest version is rated 5-star.  That is very impressive.  The iPad version has been out a short time and has fewer reviews, but is still rated very well.

Why Do You Need This App Rating = 5      Your overall health will be improved if you know what you are eating.   Experts offer tips and explain why it is important.  Check out what builtlean.com has to say about this.

How does it work?

  1. The “Home” tab is a quick display that shows you your calorie goal, how many calories you’ve eaten, how many calories you’ve burned and the net.   It also has a news feed on the screen that is something like a tweet updating your status.  At the top of the screen you can see a summary (the main screen) or you can choose the daily and weekly numbers.  These choices offer you detailed nutrition information.   I find these particularly helpful.  In the iPad version you have a pie chart showing you your carbs, fat and protein and can click to see all the nutrients.
  2.  The “My Diary” tab shows your daily food list.  From this tab, you can either add or edit your food selections.   The iPad version simplifies this and just calls it “Food.”
  3. When you select “Add,” you can choose which meal it is, what type of exercise (Cardiovascular or strength), quantity of water consumed and food or exercise notes.  The iPad version has a separate tab for exercise.
  4. When you add a meal, you can either search for your food type, type in the restaurant name and then search for your meal, or scan the bar code of the item you are consuming. When you add food to either the iPad and iPhone version you can select add either foods that you eat frequently or recently.  Or you can create your own meals and recipes to speed entry along.
  5. The “Progress” tab shows you a graph of your weight loss.  You can also record your weight on this tab.
  6. On the “Friends” tab you can see the news feed, see your list of friends, see friend requests or send a message to your friends.  With this option you can team up with someone in another area and still offer daily encouragement.
  7. The “More’ tab allows you to edit your profile or foods and exercises.

Whenever I am planning to dine out I search for items before I go, select something and then go out ready to make an informed choice that I won’t regret later.  I’ve also opened the app in a restaurant to help guide my choices.

I have used this app for about six months now and find it easy to use.  The proof of the success of an app is whether you come back to it often.  In this case, I would say it is a success.   Update:  Sometimes I get bored with apps and try out new ones.  I’ve tried out several food tracking apps and none are as easy to use or have as many pre-loaded food options as MyFitnessPal.  I am still a huge fan.

Devices:  This app can be used on either the  iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.  It requires iOS 4.0 or later.  This app was developed by MyFitnessPal, LLC.
