The Kindle App is an enjoyable addition to your iPhone. Instead of carrying a book with you everywhere, you can always have one handy on your phone. You download Kindle books through Amazon.com and, if you have one, sync with your Kindle device. You can customize your reading experience by changing the background, font or changing from portrait to landscape. The icon for the iPad version of this app is identical to the one above.
Price Rating = 5 This app is free
Ease of Use Rating = 5 Very easy. Simply click on the Kindle Store button, review options, order books and start reading.
Readability Rating = 5 You can set the font to a size that is comfortable to you. You can also change it to white type on a black background or to a Sepia tone. These changes provide you with the flexibility to create a reading experience that is best for you.
Will You Use It Rating = 5 If you like to read, this will be an app you use repeatedly. Like most readers, I love the feel of a book in my hands, but I have learned that with electronic versions I not only have a book that is lighter in my hands, but with me all the time.
Downsides Rating = 0 I don’t see any issues with the app. The iPhone has a small screen (compared to a book page) you will turn pages more often, but that is to be expected with a screen this size. This app is spectacular on an iPad. The print is clear and easy to use. The downside of the iPad is that it can be heavier than a book. A very small downside.
Consumer Review Rating = 3 There are more than 180,000 reviews, most are extremely positive. A few people commented on the app crashing. This has never happened to me and I do use it a lot. I would give this a much higher rating. It is one of my most-used apps.
Why Do You Need This App Rating = 5 In our busy lives it is not always easy to go to the library to check out a book. Having reading material readily at hand removes all barriers to finding and reading a good book.
How does it work?
If you use the Kindle app as your exclusive device, all of your books are stored on the that device. If you combine an iPad, iTouch or iPad with a Kindle device then you can order books through any device and they can be downloaded on all.
You simply click on the book you want to read, click the bottom of the screen to set the font and the background color and start reading. You tap or flip the page to move to the next page. You can search within the book and select a word to get the definition.
Other than these features, it gives you the same enjoyment as reading a book. You will need to have an Amazon account with a credit card on file – even if you order only free books. You can also send PDFs of books to your device. The instructions for this process are at Amazon.com.
It appears the functionality of the iPhone/iTouch version of the app is essentially the same on the iPad. The screen is larger and allows for larger images of the book covers, and, of course, allows you to read longer without flipping the page.
It is also far easier to shop on the Amazon’s Kindle store using the larger screen available on the iPad.
Devices: This app can be used on either the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. It requires iOS 5.0 or later. This app was developed by Amazon.com.
